Wilderness Skills - This unique class will provide basic and intermediated outdoor camping skills in orienteering/navigation, camp-craft equipment, trip planning, first aid and safety, with an emphasis on "learning by doing". The class is divided into two parts: 5-6 hands on/class room sessions and a practicum in the form of a weekend camping trip on the Lone Star Trail located in the Sam Houston National Forest. You will need a back pack, sleeping bag and pad, personal clothing, hygiene items and eating utensils. No experience is required. Participants 11-13 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian individual participants must be 14 or older.
Introduction to Climbing - This class will introduce participants the world of rock climbing using three class room sessions and one climbing trip to an indoor climbing facility at an area university. The hands on class room sessions will provide participants with a brief history and overview of types of climbing, essential equipment, knots, safety, proper belay techniques/commands and basic body movements necessary to enjoy the sport. No experience needed and all equipment is provided.
Introduction to Kayaking - This course will provide participants the opportunity to acquire the basic knowledge, information and skills necessary to handle a “recreational” kayak on flat water along with discussion of its use on other water types. This class should provide a chance for physical and emotional relaxation along with learning a meaningful way to spend leisure time.
Introduction to Mountain Biking - This course is designed to give you a practical introduction to mountain biking. Each participant will gain a better understanding of his/her bike how to use it properly and safely while negotiating obstacles along with learning a meaningful way to spend leisure time.
